Wheatland Lady Bulldogs continue to dominate

DOUGLAS – The Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways on the road this past week beginning with a hard-fought five-set match at Douglas on their senior night and then winning Friday against the Trailblazers of Torrington.

According to Wheatland volleyball coach, Sally Nichols, the game at Douglas was their biggest test this season on senior night at Douglas.

“The Bearcats defense was relentless and presented a challenge to our Bulldogs,” Nichols said. “But our gals prevailed.  All three levels left Douglas with victories. The Varsity match scores were: 19-25, 28-26, 25-11, 23-25 and 15-12.”

Leading the way in the backcourt were players Kendall Schaffner with 36 digs, Alley Gunter with 33 digs, Grace Battershell with 22 digs, Hadley Paisley with 19 digs, and Laynie Goertz with 18 digs.  The front line put up a wall with Lily Nichols tallying 9 blocks/12 stops, Anna Matthews with 5 blocks/7 stops, and Desirae Iacovetto with 7 blocks/3 stops.  The Bulldogs offense was spread between Matthews with 10 kills, Schaffner with 9 kills, Iacovetto with 9 kills, and Gavrielle Dawson with 8 kills.  Goertz, Paisley and Camryn Mickelsen also chipped in 3 Aces each as Battershell dished out 40 assists.

Friday marked the Bulldogs 20th win of the season as they defeated Torrington.

“The Trailblazers hung on for the first 10 points of each set,” Nichols said. “The Bulldogs, though came through with a victory in three sets with scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-16.  The pace of the game was different then the night before and the Bulldogs had to adjust, but as each set went on WHS set the pace.”

Schaffner tallied 14 digs and 5 kills, Battershell with 14 digs and 35 assists, and Matthews added 10 kills and 2 blocks.

This Friday night the Bulldogs will take on Rawlins at home for Senior night and finish the regular season with Moorcroft on the road Saturday.

“Mark the calendar as WHS will be hosting Regionals (Oct. 28-29) the following week,” Nichols said.
