Wheatland qualifies 17 for state

WHEATLAND—While hosting the 3A East Regional track meet this past Friday and Saturday, Wheatland’s track teams performed well as expected and will take nine boys and eight girls to the Wyoming State Track and Field Championships this week in Casper. The state meet begins Thursday, May 16 at 3 p.m. and concludes Saturday afternoon.

The boys made a strong showing in the 100-meter dash, taking three of the top 10 spots and qualifying four for the state meet. Tyler Bohnen tied for second in 11.49 seconds, Bryce Stenson took fourth, running 11.78, Brock Peasley finished sixth in 11.85 and Cole Goertz was pre-qualified. First went to Buffalo’s Kieran Murray who ran an 11.40.

Bohnen and Peasley took first and third respectively in the 200 meter dash(times of 22.53 and 23.34), qualifying for the state meet.

Simon May qualified for state by taking sixth in the 400 with a time of 54.22. Chase Holler of Douglas placed first in 49.96.

Goertz will also compete at state in the 300-meter hurdles after placing third at the regional in a time of 42.71. Payson Hollingsworth of Douglas finished first in 41.72.

Wheatland’s 4x100-meter relay team of Stenson, Goertz, Tagg Mickelsen and Bohnen moves on to state after they claimed the top finish at the regional with a time of 43.87 

The 4x400 relay team of May, Goertz, Mickelsen and Peasley finished third in the regional with a time of 3:36.59 to qualify for a lane at state. Douglas took the event clocking 3:25.17.

Jacob Miller is state qualified as he finished third in the high jump, clearing 6 feet even. Trennan Pearson of Douglas place first at 6-02.  

Claiming three of the top eight places in the regional long jump, Peasley, Bohnen and Stenson will all compete in that event at state. Peasley finished second at 20 feet, nine inches, followed by Bohnen in fourth (20-4.5) and Stenson in seventh at 20-00. Pearson of Douglas finished first, marking 21-01.75. 

Stenson and Ethan Jackson finished sixth and seventh in the triple jump respectively. Stenson marked 39-08.75 and Jackson hit 38-11.00 to qualify for the state event. Evan Hellus of Torrington hit 41-02.00 to finish first.

In the pole vault, Jackson topped the entire regional field and qualified for the state meet, clearing the bar at 13-01.00.

Clayton Dahlstedt placed third and also qualified for state, marking 11-00.

Bode Stone placed sixth in the regional shot put competition and qualified for the state meet, throwing 46-03.50. First place went to Tegen Seeds of Douglas who marked 56-09.

Douglas won the regional team title with 190 points, followed by Buffalo (160.66), Wheatland (102), Rawlins (76), Torrington (67.50), Newcastle (53), Glenrock (38.83) and Moorcroft (4).  

Wheatland’s Laynie Goertz placed sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.31 which also qualified her for the state meet. Desirae Iacovetto who was prequalified, will join her on the team in Casper. Brooklyn Asmus of Torrington finished first in 12.49.

Both girls also qualified for state in the 200 meter dash as Iacovetto took second place in 25.39 and Goertz ran a 27.29. Asmus finished first with a time of 24.79.

Lily Nichols finished second in the 400 with a time of 58.91. Asmus made it a sweep with a first-place time of 58.62.

Nichols took the regional honors in the 800, clocking 2:20.05, qualifying for the state meet. 

The 4x100 relay team of Goertz, Maggie Hicks, Kacey Otero and Emma Kaushagen finished second in the region. Their time of 51.91 sends them on to the state event.

The team of Goertz, Hicks, Iacvetto and Nichols qualified for the state berth in the 1600 sprint medley relay, winning the regional in a time of 4:21.18.

Iacovetto won the regional high jump, clearing the bar at 5-01.00 and her way to a spot in the state meet.

Lily Nichols marked 17-03.50 in the long jump, taking fourth place and qualifying for the state meet. Alyssa Wondercheck of Torrington place first, clearing 17-08.00.

Otero and Hicks will both compete in the state pole vault after picking up second and third places at the regional meet. Otero and Hicks both cleared 9-06.00. Buffalo’s Olivia Maertens finished first, clearing 10-00.

Karly Jones marked 86-02 in the regional discus and qualified for the state event.  
Buffalo won the girls’ regional title with 190.5 points, followed by Torrington (140), Douglas (117.5), Wheatland (88.5), Rawlins (75.5), Newcastle (33), Glenrock (32) and Moorcroft (13).
