WHEATLAND –Wheatland High School athlete Laynie Goertz signed an agreement on April 17, confirming her intent to run for the Chadron State College’s Women’s Track Team. Goertz is a star volleyball, basketball and track athlete for Wheatland, but track is her favorite.

“I love track – I want to do sprints in college,” Goertz said.

She has excelled at the sport this spring, contributing to breaking two school records on the 4x100 relay and sprint medley teams.

Goertz said she chose Chadron after a recommendation by track coach Matt Hazen, with the added bonus that her aunt is alumni from there and liked the campus. The track and field team at CSC has a robust track and field program and has been in the top-25 nationally in recent years.

Goertz plans to study agriculture business and is looking forward to her first season as a Chadron State Eagle.

Last week, Matthew Wakkuri signed a letter of intent to play collegiate golf for Central Wyoming Community College in Riverton. The Men’s golf team at CWC set scoring records in its season that just wrapped up after a third-place finish at district championships.

“Matthew has been given a great opportunity to continue his competitive golf career at the next level,” Wheatland High School golf coach Anthony Nichols said. “The coach at CWC has been looking to bring in Wyoming golfers into the program and it has worked well so far. Coach Neuman is getting a young man that is ready to put the work in and really wants to get better every day. I think Matthew has and will continue to make great strides in his game under the tutelage of Coach Newman while competing for a spot in the lineup every day against a loaded CWC roster. CWC’s home course is the Riverton Country Club which has very nice layout with great practice facilities. The Wheatland High School golf program is very excited for Matthew, and we can’t wait to follow the next stage of his golf journey.”
