Wheatland, Guernsey-Sunrise, Glendo and Chugwater athletes all participate at Wheatland High School Invite

WHEATLAND – The Wheatland High School Invite which was scheduled for Friday, March 31 was moved ahead to Thursday in anticipation of bad weather coming to town.

Thursday morning there were 24 teams scheduled to roll into Wheatland and search for the football field. At 7 a.m., it was 20-degrees and a thick fog had encompassed Platte County making visibility very difficult for bus drivers.

Dubois was the only team that was late due to the fog and the track meet started on time in very cold temperatures which then gave way to warmer sunshine which burned away the fog. By the afternoon most of the crowd was shedding their parkas and blankets and applying sunblock until about 2 p.m. when cloud cover rolled in and the winds were gusting to 50 mph.

The Rawlins team almost lost their tent in the wind and ended up having to take it down, leaving them no cover.

The 24 teams entered was a record according to Wheatland head coach Matt Hazen and his volunteers and staff did an incredible job of keeping things moving and communicating the wait times for athletes who were in multiple events.

The meet began at 9 a.m. and didn’t finish until almost 7 p.m. with girl’s discus going long.

“The weather has been a very limiting factor this spring for track,” Hazen said. “The first two track meets were canceled due to weather and this week we had a massive track meet due to other track meets being canceled around the state. We had 24 teams at this track meet, well over a 1,000 people at this meet and it went amazing. I am so thankful for all the people that came in to help work the meet to make it happen, this meet could not have happened without the help to run it. We are also very thankful for the great weather on Thursday and our athletes were able to take advantage of the nice weather to post some great marks to start the season. Tyler Bohnen qualified for the state meet in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Desirae Iacovetto qualified for the state meet in the 100, 200, high jump and triple jump. Lily Nichols qualified in long jump and the 300-meter hurdles. I am excited to see what the rest of the season brings if our weather holds out and we can get some more track meets in.”

"On April Fools Day, Wheatland Middle School hosted their first invitational track meet of the year," Sally Nichols, Wheatland middle school track coach said.  "Our athletes did a great job for their first meet.  Wyoming weather is of course unpredictable and the winds were brutal on Saturday, but our tracksters worked hard and achieved some great marks.  We are also very grateful for all of our volunteers and our staff for braving the conditions and making the event run smoothly."

Listed are the athletes that ended up in the top 20 for Platte County schools. There were two events held last weekend including not only the high school invite, but on Saturday, there were 11 teams entered in the Wheatland Middle School Invite. The Wheatland girls took fourth overall in the team standings, while the Wheatland boys also finished fourth. Chugwater was 10th in the girls overall team standings and also in the boys overall team score. Guernsey’s boys finished ninth.
