MIDWEST – The Guernsey-Sunrise High School varsity boys basketball team took care of business in Midwest winning big heading into the Christmas break, 61-29.

For the second week in a row, Guernsey-Sunrise held their opponents to under 30 points while scoring over 50.

The Vikings once again came out of the blocks hot and pressing and showcasing their inside/outside game on offense. After the first quarter the score was 18-6 and by halftime, the Vikings had built a 33-14 lead. Traditionally they have a tendency to rest a bit in the third quarter, but under first year head coach Steve Zimmerman, the Vikings have learned to continue the intensity and by the final stanza, the Vikes held a 49-18 lead with many contributors on the team.

Tristan Hohnholt again led the team in scoring with 22 points, led in steals with eight and led both teams in three-point shots with four. Caleb Christensen had 12 points and five blocks, seven rebounds and shot almost 70% from the field. Junior Dawson Bingham also scored 12 points, tied for the lead in assists with four and shot 100% from 2-point range. Aidan Noggle who also tied for the lead in team assists with four, scored nine points. Jacob Roper had four points and led the team in rebounds with nine. Rounding out the scoring for the Vikings was Julian Roderiguez with two points.

“ The Vikings overcame a difficult week of practice due to the weather cancellations to defeat Midwest on Saturday,” said Zimmerman.  “Our defense created 29 turnovers with aggressive on the ball pressure and back side help.  Tristan Hohnholt led the team with 8 steals.  Jacob Roper lead the team in rebounding with 9 followed by Caleb Christiansen with 7 boards and five blocked shots. As a team the Vikings are developing an understanding of offensive options.  They showed a willingness to make the extra pass for the better shot.  Aidan Noggle and Dawson Bingham lead the team with 4 assists. Dawson Bingham had his best all-around game going 6 for 7 shooting and 5 rebounds. It was great to see the starters take control from the opening of the game providing opportunity for the bench to contribute significant time in the win.”
