George was born in 1937 on the family farm in 3 Corners, Newcastle, Wyoming to Lillian Inez and Walter Earl Portwood. He worked and lived with his five siblings, Myron, Duane, Leetha, Sylvia, and Janis, on the farm and drove a truck for the neighbors.

George was preceded by his parents, his two brothers, Myron and Duane, and his youngest sister, Janis.

George graduated from Newcastle High School in 1955. He married Evelyn Rowhouser and had two children, Elizabeth and Glenn. He worked on the family farm from 1959 to 1964. He also served in the National Guard from 1960 to 1966. He drove a truck for Dixon Brothers from 1964 to 1969; in the meantime, he remarried to Bonnie Peck.  He then worked on True’s Rock River ranch as a ranch hand for Johnnie Faris from 1969 to 1973.

Later, he moved the family to Laramie Peak to True’s Double 4 ranch as foreman in 1973. He and his then-wife Bonnie had a daughter named Nancy.  Bonnie later moved to town, and they divorced.

In 1996, he met Bonnie L Parker; he hired her as a ranch hand, and soon they became inseparable. Whether it was ranching or fighting fire, they were a team for 30 years.

After 32 years, he then retired from his dream job at the Double 4 in 2005. He and Bonnie L took over a small ranch at the base of Bearhead Mountain, where they raised white Park/Angus cross until a forest fire took everything in 2012. He still resided until being taken by ambulance on the 19th of May, and he passed away on the 14th of June. George was 88 years old and lived a long and happy life, doing what he wanted and with whom he wanted.
