WHEATLAND - Twelve members of the Wheatland FFA Chapter travelled to Indianapolis, Ind. Nov. 1st to compete at the 96th National FFA Convention and came home with gold, silver, and bronze emblems all around.

WHEATLAND — Councilmember Tony Montoya and Wheatland town mayor Brandon Graves expressed their gratitude and appreciation to Deputy Clerk/Treasurer Tabitha Ennis, on the announcement that she will be leaving the safety program. “OSHA complimented our department heads in some areas that needed addressed, and Tabitha has done a great job there,” said Montoya.

WHEATLAND — There were nearly 200 people again this year at the third annual gathering of Sisters in Christ this weekend in Wheatland. Attended by people from around Platte and Goshen Counties, the event was started by Judy Miller of Wheatland, with help and support from many churches. It is not associated with any single church or denomination, Miller said. It is an event she started to help local Christian women have a time to come to fellowship and encourage one another in their lives and in their faith.

CHUGWATER — Mayor Carol Ash reported that it is nearing the end of her term and reminded everyone present that people will be able to sign up for offices, as there will be three positions coming open: one being the mayor, but also two councilmember openings.

WHEATLAND — The rumble of motorcycles paraded Saturday around Wheatland in an inaugural “toy run.” It has been several years since there was a ‘run in Wheatland, as Pete and Denise Delgado and their crew of helpers organized the event for 35 years previously.

A time of honor, respect, and remembrance was celebrated for two days on November 10th and 11th, as the Wheatland REA, VFW and VFW Auxiliary Post 3558, and American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Post 432 helped to create respectful space for vets and their families and community members to look back on the sacrifice and service of our home-town men and women choosing to vanquish enemies of the American way of life.

“When we got off the bus at the marine barracks, we were told to put our feet on the yellow footprints painted there. From the time you step into the yellow footprints, you become a marine. We never quit being Marines,” Dakota Vlach said.

WHEATLAND — Raise your hand if you ever went to summer camp. The friends and adventures and the excitement each year of reconnecting with “last summer’s friends” as well as meeting new ones lives rent-free in the childhood memories of many people.

WHEATLAND — Big Dog’s Lanes was overtaken Saturday by the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association (CVMA) and a colorful crowd of bowlers for the first ever Combat Vets bowling tournament fundraiser. “This tournament came about due to a great idea and a couple of key conversations; thus the tournament was born,” said Kelly Mixson, CVMA member. The tournament was 9-pin No Tap with a $30 entry fee. If you’re not familiar with 9-pin, the simple explanation is that knocking down nine pins on the first throw counts as a strike, and further chances to knock down the solitary pin is not necessary; a variation of traditional bowling scoring that is commonly used during tournaments to attract players of all skill levels.

The many roads of life, whether winding or straight, rocky or smooth, have a way of bringing people back around to their starting block. All roads may not lead to Rome, but they might lead to Wyoming.

The Leadership Team is already making a list of their heroes to be asked for the next Women in Ag Symposium, and so they hope to see you in a Saturday in October in 2024 at the next Women in Ag Symposium.

Those attending enjoyed a luncheon buffet consisting of dozens of different salads, fresh shrimp cocktail, fruit and garden variety vegetables along with tier upon tier of home-baked pastries and cookies.

The PCED currently has a roster of 71 members, represented by businesses, individuals and other organizations throughout Platte County. Also in attendance were Platte County Commissioners Steve Shockley, Kayla Mantle, and Ian Jolovich.

When you think of piecing together a puzzle, you may imagine a cozy winter day with lazy snowflakes falling outside and leisurely watching the image unfold under your nimble fingers.

The Lodging Tax & Tourism Joint Powers Board consists of five board members. Wheatland, Guernsey, Glendo, Chugwater, and Platte County each appoint a representative to that board.

Wheatland’s Downtown District continues to grow and thrive. Members of Platte County Main Street have been busy welcoming new businesses on a regular basis.

The proposition originating from the Platte County Parks & Recreation (PCPR) board was not based on a whim, according to board members Josh Sandlian and Heidi Adams, the board’s professional bookkeeper. “We didn’t just come up with this proposition overnight,” explained Sandlian. “We have been researching and studying the reality and feasibility of a multi-use facility for at least five years now, and have been setting funds aside for this purpose by our very careful and conservative budgeting.”

Brisen Palmer finally received a kidney transplant on September 28, 2023. There was a bake sale and silent auction that family, friends, and many volunteers put on as a fundraiser this past Sunday to help pay for bills that would not be covered by insurance such as housing and traveling expenses.

Having no genetic or family history of cancer of any kind, Madsen was perplexed by the diagnosis, which came suddenly after waking in the middle of the night in severe pain. Within two months of the onset of the breast pain, Madsen found herself being treated for the worst: an extremely aggressive type of breast cancer.
