CASPER – The Wheatland High School track and field teams wrapped up the season last weekend at the 3A State Track and Field Championships at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper.
The Lady Bulldogs finished sixth with 55 points, while the boys’ team placed 10th with 28 points.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Lily Nichols and Desirae Iacovetto, who picked up the team’s only individual state championships on the weekend. Both earned multiple medals at state.
Nichols won long jump at 17 feet, while Iacovetto won the 100-meter dash in 12.43 seconds.
Iacovetto also finished second in the 200-meter dash in 26.04 seconds.
Nichols set two new school records in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 18.07 seconds, and the 300-meter hurdles in 46 seconds. She finished second and third in those events, respectively.
“Lily Nichols won girls long jump on the first day of state track in the cooler temps and rain. She jumped 17 feet and sealed her spot as the 3A state champion for the event. She also earned all-state honors for girls’ long jump,” Hazen said. “Lily also ran well in the girls 300-meter hurdles. She broke her own record during prelims and again during the finals with a new record time of 46.00, almost a full second of improvement from her final regitonal time last week.”
The other highlight of the weekend went to the girls’ 4x100 relay team of Laynie Goertz, Grace Battershell, Kacey Otero and Iacovetto. They set a new school record in the race in 50.60 seconds to place fifth overall.
Tyler Bohen led the Bulldog boys with a pair of third-place finishes. He finished third in the 100-meter dash in 11.33 seconds and was third in the 200-meter dash in 23.30 seconds.
Ethan Jackson ended the season with an all-state honor, finishing second in pole vault, clearing 12 feet.
“I am so very proud of the group of athletes we had this year. We had huge setbacks with rough weather that plagued us all season, including one day at state track. We had multiple meets get canceled including the last meet before regionals. We had to end a few practices early this last week leading up to state due to lightning as well,” coach Matt Hazen said. “It all takes its toll on the athletes and can make it difficult to stay in the right frame of mind going into the state competitions. Despite the setbacks, we still had records get broken and some high placers at state.”
