Wrestlers win their first home meet of season

WHEATLAND – Thursday night would be a nail biter in front of a large home crowd on the edge of their seats as Wheatland hosted Laramie for a dual that also served as the last home dual for the graduating 2023 senior wrestlers.

The only home match of the season honored the senior wrestlers and their parents: Barak Bertoch, son of Kara and Andy Bertoch, Maxx Meyer, son of Greg and Lanay Meyer, Jayden McDaniel, daughter of Amanda and John McDaniel, Savanna Metz, daughter of Pam and Keith Metz, Hayden Hocker, son of Kelly and Bill Klein, and Caden Davis, son of Jenny and Cory Gillaspie.

The match would come down to the last match of the night. Laramie led Wheatland 36-34, and a win on the last match of the night for Cooper Meyer would give Wheatland the points that they needed. A loss would also mean a team loss.

Wheatland would secure both the individual win and also the team win, Wheatland comes out on top 40-36.

Friday and Saturday would take the Bulldog wrestlers to the Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament in Douglas.

With 29 teams represented from Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado there was sure to be some tough competition for the grapplers, coming off Christmas break.

The tournament was held at two locations with JV wrestling at the Bearcats practice facility and varsity and the girls’ divisions at the high school.

The JV boys wrestled hard, and all came up short to make it to the second day. Wheatland had three varsity boy wrestlers and three girls coming back for wrestle backs. The Bulldogs had less than an ideal match as Maxx Meyer and Barak Bertoch would be facing each other in the blood rounds. The winner advancing to the placing matches and the wrestler with the loss falling just short of placing.

At the end of the day, Wheatland had three wrestlers with medals around their necks. Barak Bertoch with a fourth-place finish at 220 pounds. In the girl’s division, Jenna Karr also secured fourth place at 135 pounds and Alex Kumelos brought home second place at 130 pounds.
