Wheatland opens on the road for first game

MITCHELL, NE – The new-look 2022 Wheatland High School football team has the monumental task of taking on the Mitchell Tigers who fell one game short of their state high school playoffs last season in division C-1.

The Tigers dropped down to C-2 but would be every bit as tough as they were last season. The game would be an eye-opener for the Bulldogs and give them some top-ranked competition heading into the season in Wyoming.

“Our first game is definitely something we will learn from and will benefit us moving forward,” said head football coach Cody Bohlander. “Mitchell was a a good team, very disciplined and had the size and speed you like to see in a team. They played well as a group and gave us a tough match up to work against for our guys in their first game.
“I felt we did some things well as a whole. We started out a little slow but were able to get the ball moving against the big defense. We were able to run and throw the ball in the game but would keep ourselves out of the end zone with drive ending turnovers, penalties and mistakes. I liked what I saw with our offense and feel we are headed in the right direction.

“Our defense had some let downs throughout the night. I think our biggest let down was that our tackling was not good. With guys as big as they had running at us, we needed to tackle lower and continued to hit guys high. We have some things to work on this week and need to take what we learned in this game and head in the right direction.”

The Bulldogs will play 2A West powerhouse, Mountain View at home this coming Friday at 7 p.m.
