Wheatland comes out strong in homecoming victory

Posted

WHEATLAND – The Bulldogs made it two in a row as they defeated Glenrock in Friday night’s homecoming game, 29-6.

The scoring was started by Wheatland as junior quarterback Brock Peasley hit JP Anderson for a six-yard touchdown pass. Tyler Bohnen kicked the extra point and from that point on, the defense was stout but the offense was stagnant and each time they got something going, Glenrock would shut it down or the Dogs would shoot themselves in the foot with penalties.

With two seconds left in the half the Herders mounted an impressive ground attack and scored but missed extra point.

After a long halftime due to the homecoming activities, the Bulldogs came out firing and Peasely again went to the air and hit multiple receivers, going to Tagg Mickelsen, JP Anderson and a 68-yard touchdown strike to Suko who had managed to get out of the backfield unnoticed and was wide open down field. A botched snap actually worked to the Bulldog’s favor as Peasely picked up the ball and bulled his way into the endzone for the two-point conversion making the score 15-6.

The Bulldogs shut down the Herders and after a punt, Peasley and Suko went back to work and they connected on a 71-yard touchdown pass with Suko catching the well-thrown ball in stride and turned on the jets to the end zone leaving three Herders in his wake. Once again Bohnen kicked the extra point making the score 22-6.

The Dawgs put the final nail in the coffin with a two-yard run late in the game.

The Bulldgs had 34-yards on the ground and although they have been consistent in the the ground game, Glenrock had them scouted pretty good and packed the box, daring the Dogs to throw the ball. A decision they may be rethinking this entire week.

Peasley was 13-24 for 268 yards through the air. Glenrock on the other hand only gained 22 yards through the air, but pounded the ball for 247 yards.

“We had guys open in the endzone,” head coach Cody Bohlander said. “We just got to get them the ball. It took us a while to get going, but maybe the long halftime speech made the difference and got them headed in the right direction. They responded well. But we have to come from the first quarter and do what we need to do so that it’s not such a fight to get the points on the board that we need.”

Bohlander who spent his second straight week coaching from the booth and directing traffic from a distance seemed to like that transition.

“I enjoyed it,” Bohlander said. “I think it helped me be able to see things defensively  that would help us.”

The Bulldogs are facing two tough road trips in the next few weeks, traveling to Big Horn Friday night for a 6 p.m. kickoff and then the following week heading to Upton/Sundance.
