WHEATLAND – Former Wheatland High School track star Ronda Munger was in Wheatland again last week to congratulate Lily Nichols on her success in beating her school long jump record, set 40 years ago in 1984.
With a goal to jump 18 feet, Nichols landed at 18 feet, 9.5 inches. Munger’s mark was 18 feet, 8 inches. Nichol’s score also set a new 3A record in the girls long jump, beating out 2018 jump by Naya Shime at 18 feet, 8.75 inches.
“I never expected any of my records to last this long,” Munger said.

Munger gave Nichols a t-shirt that says, “It’s really Field and Track.”
At the state competition, Nichols also won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:22.48, and contributed to the first-place win of 4:10.56 in the sprint medley relay race, along with Laynie Goertz, Maggie Hicks and Desirae Iacovetto. The relay team set a new class 3A overall state record, beating the previous 4:14.04 time set by Rawlins in 2023 and Jackson’s overall state record of 4:11.53 set in 2021.
Nichols is headed to the University of Wyoming this fall to compete on the heptathlon team. Heptathlons are two-day events where athletes compete in seven different track and field events.
Munger also congratulated Desirae Iacovetto on beating her personal best time in the 100-meter dash. Earlier this season she had broken Munger’s 1984 school record 12.22 run with a time of 12.19. At state preliminaries, Iacovetto ran the 100m in 11.96.
