Local five-sport athlete signs with UW

WHEATLAND – On Wednesday, at 3:45 on November 8, Lily Nichols, of Wheatland, signed her National Letter of Intent to compete in the heptathlon, 400 hurdles and middle distance for the University of Wyoming Track & Field Team.

Not only is Nichols now an official Division I athlete, but she has also maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her high school career. Nichols competed in five sports while attending Wheatland High School which include golf, cross country, volleyball, basketball and track. 

Across this range of athletics, Nichols has also earned top achievements in all sports. In her golf, cross country, basketball and track stints, she earned 14 all-conference awards, has broken 15 school records in all five of these sports, and has earned 12 all-state awards in golf, cross country, basketball and track. 

During her junior and senior years, Nichols was named the 3A East Golfer of the Year and is also a three-time 3A state champion golfer on the WHS golf teams as well as a four-time 3A conference golf team champion.  

Nichols also earned 14 varsity letters, and still has two athletic seasons to complete in 2024, basketball and track. 

In 2022, WHS earned the 3A East Conference Championship, during which Nichols played a role. 

Individual track accolades include 3A East Conference champion in 1600 and 3200-meters (2021), long jump (2022 and ‘23), 400-meters (2022 and ‘23) as well as 3A state champion in the 400-meters and 800-meters (2022) and the long jump in 2023. 

In the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Nichols was an individual 3A East girls golf conference champion.
