WHEATLAND – The sun shone warm and bright for the Memorial Day Ceremony held at the Wheatland Cemetery on Monday.
The “Avenue of Flags” erected every year to line the cemetery roads waved a welcome to everyone who came to pay their respects and honor our nations veterans who gave their lives for our country.
It was nice to have the street leading to the Veteran’s Memorial roped off so vehicles couldn’t park along the side which made the Color Guard easily seen by everyone in attendance as they marched their way to the Memorial.
Chuck Brown began the ceremony with the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Father Nguyen from St. Patrick’s Church was present to lead the opening prayer and benediction. The featured speaker was Senator Brian Boner and “Flander’s Fields” poem with response were read by Claire and Eve Peasley.
Justin Herdt of DJ Magik was on hand to provide the anthem and patriotic music for the service. The recorded music was beautiful, but the live bugle playing of “Taps” by Lloyd Koerwitz was missed. While Koerwitz was present, he was not able to play this year.
A moving and reverent service worthy of our nation’s heroes.
