Platte County 4-H’ers excel at public speaking

Posted

WHEATLAND — Imagine teaching a crowd how to build a rubber band gun, care for pregnant cows or dream up an invention in 10 minutes — Platte County 4-H’ers did just that as they put their public speaking skills to the test with informational speeches and an impromptu speaking category at the annual 4-H Presentations Contest on June 6.
Three 4-H’ers competed for the Grand and Reserve Champion in their age categories.

Presenters were required to give a presentation of their choice with a specific time limit as their only criteria. Junior members, ages 8 to 10, gave presentations three to 10 minutes long; intermediate members, ages 11-13, gave presentations five to 10 minutes long; and senior age members gave presentations seven to 15 minutes long.
In addition, all 4-H’ers participated in the Impromptu Presentations category.  The Impromptu Presentations category requires members to draw a topic from a hat the day of the competition, take a few moments to prepare their thoughts and give a short speech about that topic. Topics for the Impromptu Presentations division included; “If you could invent one thing, what would you invent?” “What do you do on a rainy day?” and “Describe a school organization you participate in,” among others.
All 4-H members did a fantastic job with their prepared and impromptu presentations.
