A graveside service for Mitchell Benjamin Gillis, 55, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday Dec. 8, at the Hazlehurst City Cemetery in Hazlehurst, Georgia.
After a lifelong battle with type 1 diabetes, Mitchell succumbed to this horrible disease at his home in Wheatland.
Mitchell was born June 8, 1963 in McRae, Ga., the son of Lester and Betty Jean Gillis. He graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1985 with a degree in Chemistry. He was passionate about his work in the electric power industry. His career spanned over 33 years in the industry. Michell worked at Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant in Baxley, Ga., Tennessee Valley Authority, in Muscle Shoals, Ala., Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, in Athens, Ala., and Laramie River Basin Power Plant, in Wheatland. Mitchell had a love for electronics, technology, and how they worked. He enjoyed working in carpentry in his spare time and acting with the Platte County Players and the Casper Theater Company.
Mitchell is survived by his son, Matthew Benjamin Gillis of Saint Simmons Island, Ga.; nephew, Lee Malcom (Lori) Gillis, Jr.; great nephew, Mack; and great niece, Lucy, all of Macon, Ga.
Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Malcom Gillis, Sr.; sister, Jeannine Gillis; aunt and uncle, Margret and Joe Frazier; and a cousin, Jimmy Frazier.
Memorials can be made to the American Diabetes Association.
The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland are in charge of the arrangements.
