WHEATLAND — The Wheatland High School Academic Decathlon team traveled to nationals last week in Texas and earned six individual medals, which is a record high for the team.

WHEATLAND — The Wheatland High School Academic Decathlon team traveled to nationals last week in Texas and earned six individual medals, which is a record high for the team.  
Senior Trigg Peasley and junior Cali Moody tied for gold in essay in their bracket. Peasley also earned gold for the interview portion of the contest.  
Calysta Bascus, junior, earned gold in essay in her bracket.

Freshman Colter Kennedy and Quinn Lawrence were both medalists for the team. Kennedy earned a bronze medal in language and literature, and Lawrence earned a bronze in science.
Bascus was chosen most valuable player by her teammates, and Elyse Rutherford earned the high point award for the team. Each of these girls earned a $250 scholarship.  
In addition, Matthew Wilhelm placed fourth in science and Elyse Rutherford placed fourth in interview.   
Overall, the team placed 10th out of 22 teams in their division.  
The team members include: Elyse Rutherford, Trigg Peasley and Cali Moody in the honors bracket; Matthew Wilhelm, Quinn Lawrence and Calysta Bascus in the scholastic bracket; and Colter Kennedy and Patsy Spiker in the varsity bracket.
The competition includes 10 areas of study: economics, music, social science, mathematics, language and literature, science, art, interview, speech and essay. Students study these 10 areas during the summer and school year and are tested in this culminating event.
