WHS girls take on Gering teams, win both games

WHEATLAND – WHS Girls JV and varsity came out on top against Gering, Nebraska teams last week.
JV coach Peter Fenster stated, “The JV continues to get better with every game they play. Each and every girl contributes to our team and that shows up in our stats. We have multiple girls that average around four to six points, and three to five rebounds a game. This team plays hard every single possession which is the biggest reason why they beat Gering on Thursday night.”

The varsity won a tight game with several lead changes by a score of 57-55. Lily Anderson led with 38 points, hitting on 13 of 24 shots including six of 13 from behind the arc; Tayen Wakkuri added seven points – including a three-pointer; Camryn Mickelsen had five points; Molly McGuire added four points; and Ella Keil chipped in three points.
Mickelsen led with seven boards and McGuire pulled down five boards. Anderson led assists with five, and Mickelsen dished out three.
Coach Eric Jones said, “I continue to be amazed at the grit these girls show. We had a very poor second quarter and went from a large lead to being behind to start the second half. The girls fought hard and played well. Lily’s (Anderson) six three-pointers increased her school record. The girls are starting to feed off each other’s play, whether offensively or defensively, and that turned the game against Gering around.”
Coach Jones continued, “I look forward to having our full lineup back and hopefully everyone will be healthy next week. At one point during the game, we had one senior and four sophomores on the floor. Our young players and bench continue to grow and improve.”
