WHEATLAND – The number-four ranked Lady Bulldogs faced off against number-five ranked Cheyenne Central in a double header at home on Monday. WHS split their games winning the first by a score of 13-8, and falling in the second, 7-3.
In the first go the Bulldogs were trailing 5-1. However, they didn’t let up and scored eight runs in the third and fourth innings, increasing the score to 9-5. They scored 5 runs on 5 hits to launch the comeback.

Camryn Mickelsen hit a double in the sixth and drove in two runs, which was the nail in the coffin for the Central Indians. This play plus two more runs scored for a total of 13. As a whole, the Bulldogs had 15 hits: Sophie Meyer had three hits on five at-bats and two RBI’s; C. Mickelsen had two hits and three RBI’s; and Makenzie Lockman posted two hits and two RBI’s. Ayden Coates, Whitley Vaughn, and Eleni McKee all had hits in the game.
Coach Jodie Fitzwater summed up the two games, “The Lady Bulldogs definitely came out ready to play with confidence against Cheyenne Central. We give credit to the players holding strong after starting the first inning in the situation of being down 5 to 1. Each inning the players offensively kept chipping away at Central’s initial lead and defensively holding them to three additional runs during the game. The team played like we knew they could! It was said that we had timely hits to win the game, but our response to that comment is, ‘No, they hit like they are able to and they demonstrated how much depth there is to the team.’ The players put in the hard work day in and day out to get where they are, and they deserve to be noted as a team deserving to earn wins against the 4A teams.”
In the second game of the day, also against Cheyenne Central, Wheatland had a tough third inning, allowing six runs. Sophie Meyer took the loss for the Bulldogs at the mound pitching multiple innings, striking out five and walking one.
WHS showed Torrington on the schedule Tuesday, April 22, Cheyenne East on Friday, April 25th and then Saturday, April 26th Cheyenne Central at home.
