WHEATLAND – The Wheatland High School Lady Bulldogs will head to the James Johnson Classic held in Cheyenne on Jan. 9. The girls started the season off with a 7-1 record and look to continue to keep that momentum into 2025. WHS will host Gering, Nebraska on Thursday, the 16th (C @ 2:30 p.m., JV @ 4 p.m., varsity @ 5:30 p.m. at WHS). Then they’ll travel to Lander on Saturday, Jan. 18th. Conference play will start on Jan. 23 as the Bulldogs take on Torrington at home (C @ 7 p.m. at WMS, JV @ 4 p.m. at WHS, and varsity @ 5:30 p.m. at WHS).
Head Coach Eric Jones is satisfied with this year’s progress so far. “I’m very pleased with the first part of the season before Christmas break. The girls embraced the faster style of play I wanted to bring to this team,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the rest of the season. We have an extremely demanding schedule as we open the new year against four of the best teams in the state that will challenge our tenacity. As we spend a majority of our season on the road, we will be battle tested and ready for our regional competition in Glenrock, and hopefully on to the state tournament in March.”
Following eight games in 2024 the Lady Bulldogs lead their quad with Torrington in second, Burns in third, and Rawlins in fourth. WHS is averaging 54.5 points per game which is good for fourth in 3A; and sit third in team defense only allowing 36.1 points scored against on average. Individual highlights include sophomore Lily Anderson averaging 28.3 points per game (first in 3A and first in the state), 92% free-throw percentage (first in 3A), 4.8 steals per game (fourth in 3A), 34% from three-point range (seventh in 3A), and 2.8 assists per game (10th in 3A).
