Wheatland hosts third annual junior golf tournament
WHEATLAND – Last Monday, the Wheatland Golf Course played host to the third annual Wheatland junior golf tournament. Close to thirty golfers participated with three boys’ divisions and two girls’ divisions. Each junior golfer played nine holes from age-appropriate tee boxes, received a goodie bag, and were greeted to delicious lunch off the grill after turning in their scorecards.
The winning golfers in each division were:
Boys 13 - 14 Griffin Nichols
Boys 10 - 12 Hayden Unrein
Boys 7 - 9 Sam Goddard
Girls 13 - 14 Jaylen Kaufman
Girls 9 - 11 Aspen Keil
This tournament is run by the Wheatland High School golf team, the Wheatland Golf Course staff, and the many volunteers that help behind the scenes. The sponsors for this tournament make this event possible. The Cowboy Derby Golf Tournament crew (Erik and Allie Eddington and Tiffany Dean) provide the goodie bags and food. Laramie Peak Veterinary Services (Daryl and Brenda Unrein) donated gift cards to the top finishers, Platte County Park and Rec (Steve Pollock) had trophies made, and the Wheatland Golf Club board and staff did not charge to shut down the course.
“This event provides our team an opportunity to give back to the community, support the growth of the golf, and inspire these young golfers to one day be a part of our golf program. Each year it is awesome to see our high school golfers caddy and mentor these future bulldogs,” Coach Tony Nichols said. “Although this junior event is only in the third year, we already have varsity golfers that played in this event the past two years. In my opinion, that says it all. Growing a passion for the game at a young age is helping our golf program reach new heights and securing the next generation of Wheatland Golf Course members.”
