Seniors craft homemade Christmas tree decorations

WHEATLAND – The Services for Seniors Activities Center in Wheatland was busy earlier this month making handmade Christmas ornaments for their tree at the Library, for the tour of trees displayed at the Platte County Library.
“Our seniors have been plum creative and having fellowship together while making handmade creative Christmas ornaments to decorate their own Christmas tree at the Library for the tour of trees,” activities director Carrie Kafka said.
Some ornaments were log cabins made out of pretzels and recycled milk containers with decorative rocks added to make a chimney. Pinecones were used to make miniature owls with seashells for eyes, real bird feathers for their wings, and a clove for the nose. Whimsical trees, angels, and flowers ornaments were created out of sticks and flower pods. The multitude of decorations didn’t cost much more than a bit of imagination and hot glue.

Thee tree was finished off with hand strung cranberries and popcorn, and dried oranges slices topped with berries and acorns. Peacock feathers topped it all off.
Kafka said the project was truly a team effort and thanked everyone who pitched in to help create the beautiful and unique Christmas ornaments. The tree is on display in the Wyoming Room of the library with a little sign that’s reads, “Handmade Christmas ornaments made by our local Seniors from the Activities center in Wheatland.”
Other activities at the center packed the calendar with free Christmas movies, a Christmas ballet performance by our local young Ballet dancers from Dance Wyoming Studio, Christmas crafting, a Christmas party complete with an ugly sweater contest and live piano music entertainment. Come on by the Wheatland Activities center anytime for a hot cup of coffee and some small-town fellowship.
“It’s truly the little things that mean the most,” Kafka concluded.
