WHEATLAND – Camryn Mickelsen has been the setter for Wheatland High School the last two seasons and recently reached the “1000 assists” mark, and has helped the team to three 20-plus win seasons in a row.
In 2022 the Bulldogs posted a 28-9 overall and 6-0 conference record. In 2023 WHS finished with a 24-12-1 overall record and 5-1 conference record. So far in 2024 the Lady Bulldogs are 20-6 and 3-0 in their conference quad. This is no easy feat and definitely attests to a great senior class that will be sorely missed next season.
An additional highlight features Mickelsen with 442 assists this fall which ranks her fifth in the state for all classes prior to last week’s matches. That also puts the senior over the 1000 career assists mark with 1081 and counting: a huge milestone in volleyball.
This year alone, Mickelsen has accrued 492 assists so far this season. In Camryn’s junior year she posted 576 assists, running a 5-1 for the first half of the season and a 6-2 the second half. The Bulldogs placed third in 2023 at conference and won one match at the state tournament. Her sophomore year she was a serving specialist for the 3A East Conference Champs and State 3A third-place team. Camryn is also a standout All-Conference and All-State softball player and plays basketball in the winter for the Bulldogs.
Head coach Sally Nichols had this to say about Camryn, “She is a remarkable person. She is a great leader and will give every ounce of effort to her team. In practice, I told Cam that she is an All-Conference setter but I wanted to put her in a different role for the week to see if we could beat Douglas. Her response was, ‘Coach, all I want to do is win, whatever it takes. Winning is more important than All-Conference to me.’ All I could do was smile and think to myself, wow that is impressive. If only she was 6’1” instead of 5’6”. However, her heart and will to win make up for the seven inches.”
