BURNS – Last Thursday the Wheatland High School volleyball team traveled to Burns to compete against the Broncs on their senior night. The JV started the night off with a two-set victory. The varsity followed with a 3-set conference win: 25-9, 25-17, 25-13. The Burns Broncs were much improved since the last time the Bulldogs played them in September.
Burns challenged the Bulldogs’ back row with strong serving and scrappy defense throughout the match. However, freshman Sophia Meyer saw her first varsity action and made the most of it, serving 17 times with 0 errors and one ace.
The Lady Bulldogs hosted the Trailblazers of Torrington for another conference match on Friday night. The C-Team fell short in two sets and the JV won in two. The varsity match ended with WHS on top: 25-14, 25-18, and 25-14. Torrington was taken back a bit the first two sets with the Bulldogs running a crisp offense with few hitting errors, capitalizing on consistent passing and strong defense.
Camryn Mickelsen used smooth passes from Ella Keil and Delaney Aurich to deliver the ball to dominant attacks led by Desirae Iacovetto and Gavrielle Dawson. The third set the Blazers attempted to run a three-setter offense to catch the Bulldogs front line off guard, but quick decisions by Aiden Coates, Iacovetto, and Karley Adams on the block enabled the back line to read and cover off-speed contacts.
Stat leaders for the night included: Dawson with eight kills, seven digs, and two aces; Mickelsen with 30 assists and one ace; Iacovetto had 13 kills and four blocks; Adams posted four blocks; Coates had four kills and one block; Keil had 23 digs and one ace; Sophia Meyer served 10 times with one ace; and Maggie Hicks served 12 times and had four digs.
After the weekend’s games, the varsity Bulldogs are seeded second for the regional tournament, scheduled for Nov. 1 and 2 in Douglas. Opponents and the final bracket will be determined after final conference play this week. The Bulldogs host Rawlins on Friday, Oct. 25 at 2, 3, and 4 p.m. for senior night and the last C-Team match. WHS will finish their regular season on the road, facing off against Moorcroft on Saturday.
