WHEATLAND and NEWCASTLE – The Lady Bulldogs tipped off against the Burns Lady Broncs in a conference matchup this past Thursday. The Wheatland High School girls finished on top by a score of 68-29.
Coach Jones stated, “It was great being on the home floor on Thursday. We executed better against Burns than we had the week before. We are still growing as a team so Thursday was a good win,” said head coach Eric Jones.
Leaders in stats were Lily Anderson with 30 points and six steals; Ella Keil with 12 points and three steals; Molly McGuire had nine points and three steals; Camryn Mickelsen had five points, four assists, and four steals; Tayen Wakkuri and Paige Hofrock chipped in three points each; Karley Adams and Shayden Davis had two points; and Karly Jones posted two points, five assists, and three steals.
The second game of the week for the WHS Varsity was also at Newcastle. The Dogies played like they were on a mission. The Bulldogs struggled from the charity stripe and shooting in the Dogie Dome is always a challenge. However, the Dawgs rose up the second half and netted a conference win by a score of 53-36.
Coach Jones commented, “We struggled early against Newcastle. I am unsure if it was the bus ride or that some of the girls are fighting colds; however, we came out a little flat and didn’t play very good defense or rebound the ball strongly. In the third quarter we increased our tempo and the girls’ shots started falling and we were able to pull away. Overall, a successful weekend. We are looking forward to Buffalo on Friday.”
Leaders for the night were Anderson with 23 points and three assists; Keil with 12 points; Mickelsen with six assists and two steals; Jones had nine rebounds and three assists; and McGuire posted eight points and five rebounds.
Lily Anderson is top ten for all 3A teams in numerous categories: first in points at 26 per game, first in free-throw percentage at 83%, fourth in steals at 4.4 per game, seventh in field goal percentage at 47%, eighth in assists at 2.5 per game, and ninth in three-point percentage at 31%.
Molly McGuire has also been very efficient in shooting and is sitting second in Wyoming 3A rankings at 54% for field goal percentage.
JV girls basketball
The Wheatland JV team won both of their games this weekend. The first game they won 53-17. Coach Peter Fenster stated, “Both games were a testament to how hard these gals are working in practice.”
The effort was led by Shayden Davis with 15 points and five rebounds. Hayden Sisson pitched in 14 points and nine steals.
On Saturday the JV won against Newcastle 39-27. Leaders for the game were: Shayden Davis with eight points, Tayen Wakkuri with seven points, and Karly Adams with six points. Katie Miller and Hayden Sisson led the team with three steals each and Madi Lange collected seven rebounds.
