Lady Bulldogs 2-2 in weekend tourney

CHEYENNE – The Wheatland Bulldogs girls varsity basketball team went 2-2 on the weekend. WHS played a tough game Thursday against the Sheridan Broncs, coming up 10 points short with an end score of 43-33.
It was a hard-fought battle, yet Sheridan – being the returning State 4A Champs of 2024 and number-four-ranked team – proved to be efficient and played with a lot of maturity with few turnovers and consistent shooting. Statistical leaders for the Wheatland team were Lily Anderson with 14 points and five boards, Camryn Mickelsen with seven points and five boards, Karly Jones with five points, Molly McGuire with four points and six boards, and Ella Keil with four assists.
On Friday the Bulldogs bounced back and overcame the number-five team in 4A, the Laramie Plainsmen, by a score of 53-44. WHS really pushed the ball up and beat Laramie in transition as the Lady Bulldogs definitely dictated the pace of the game.

Leaders in statistics were Anderson with 25 points, 10 boards, and four assists, McGuire with seven points and five boards, Tayen Wakkuri with seven points and six boards, Mickelsen with eight boards and four assists, and Karley Adams with four points.
The girls had two games on Saturday with the first matchup of the day with the 4A number-four team, Campbell County Camels. WHS finished just short losing by two points in the final seconds by a score of 63-61. Statistical leaders for Wheatland were Anderson with 30 points, six boards, and five assists; Keil with six points and four assists; McGuire with six points and six boards; Wakkuri with six points; Mickelsen with four points and nine boards; and Bianca Dawson with four points. 
In the second game of the day, the Bulldogs beat the number-one ranked 1A team, the Cyclones of Southeast with a score of 43-20. The Cyclones executed a strong flex offense but with a few adjustments by the Bulldogs and full court pressure, WHS handled the 2024 1A state champs. Leaders in statistics were Anderson with 14 points, three boards, and three assists; Mickelsen with eight points and three boards; McGuire had seven points and six boards; Karly Jones and Ella Keil had five points each; and Dawson had four points.
The Lady Bulldogs will play Gering, Nebraska at home on Thursday, then travel to Lander Valley on Saturday.
