WHEATLAND – The Wheatland Bulldogs took on the Gering, Nebraska Bulldogs on Thursday at home and fell short, 55-43. Gering came in with a 4-6 record and Wheatland was 4-8.
The game was relatively low-scoring in the beginning with a box score of 10-5 in favor of Gering. Jake Hyche and Tate Nichols both got into foul trouble which created a challenge for WHS on offense. Jake Miller, a shifty lefty, drove to the basket and created some scoring. Cayden Neely hit a three to close the gap, but the Bulldogs were down by double digits going into half time.
Head coach Mick Cochran stated, “We got ourselves in some early foul trouble. I felt like if we could stay reasonably close, we could make a run in the second half. We were able to do that, and I was really proud of our resilience.”
The first half deficit was too much to overcome for the Wheatland and they posted a 12-point loss.
Jake Miller led the team with 15 points, shooting six of 14 from the field; and Tate Nichols had 14 points, shooting three of seven; Jake Hyche finished with seven points, hitting on three of four shots. Hyche led with five boards, Nichols had four, and Miller added three.
