GUERNSEY – Isaac Cdebaca was recognized in front of Platte County School District. No. 2 school board last Monday for his contribution to the Wheatland High School Golf Team’s record setting year and state championship.
Cdebaca’s golf coach, Tony Nichols, attended the recognition to speak on his behalf. Cdebaca earned all-conference and all-state awards and provided counting scores for both events. The boys broke the one-day and two-day Wheatland school records, and Isaac’s name will be on that record board along with the state championship trophy. He was also recognized as the student of the month for Guernsey-Sunrise School.
“Athletic Director Joylyn Hillen reached out to me last spring about a new transfer student from Colorado that had some varsity experience and wanted to play golf in high school upon coming to Wyoming. We have a contract agreement with student athletes from PCSD No. 2 if golfers want to give golf a try, but we’ve never had a player make our starting lineup,” Nichols said. “Isaac not only earned a spot in our lineup with an intense 99 holes of qualifying, but earned a ton of respect from his teammates. Isaac flat out made our team better from day one. It did not take long for him to become ‘one of the guys.’ The spring before, he immersed himself into a small rural school district and then battled for a spot on the best golf team in the state. All I know is that Isaac represented PCSD No. 2 and Wheatland High School Golf with his playing ability and – most importantly – the way he carried himself on the golf course. Being the team to beat automatically put him in the spotlight because he could play, and he was also an unknown in Wyoming golf circles. I had numerous coaches mention how impressed they were with his game and character during the season.”
“I was so proud of Isaac for being recognized by the school board for his golf season, but earning student of the month on the same night really says a lot about the young man,” Nichols said.
