Lending a helping paw: Local girl gives back for her birthday

Modified: Wednesday, Sep 11th, 2013

WHEATLAND - What does one give a girl who has everything?

In the case of Jackie Still's 6-year-old daughter Maria, it's the birthday girl who will do the giving this year.

Maria, who turned six on Sept. 3, will hold a birthday party on Sept. 15 at the First State Bank Conference Center, but instead of accepting gifts, Maria asked those attending to make a donation to Platte Animal Welfare Services in Wheatland.

Jackie said she and Maria were watching the Disney Channel when a "The Time I (TTI) Moment" segment aired depicting someone donating shoes to an orphanage, which helped spark the idea for Maria's party.

Jackie recalled the sit-down conversation.

"I was talking with her and she thought (the shoe donation campaign) was a neat idea," Jackie said. "I said 'you have so many things and so many people who love you, would you like to give to somebody else?' And she said 'Yeah, I want to help animals.'"
