LARAMIE - Two years before Eli Jaren was born, the Wyoming Buddy Walk took its first steps.

Now, at age 11, the Wheatland boy, football fan and fourth-grader will join his family on the 13th annual event, stepping off early in the morning on Saturday.

Like many other families from the area and beyond, the Jarens, Randy, Millette and Eli, participate every year to raise awareness about people with Down syndrome just like Eli and raise money to support individuals and their families affected by the genetic disorder.

Millette said the event grows every year.

"It has a lot of sponsors from businesses in Wheatland," she said. "It's a huge event. We have a great turnout."

Activities will begin at 9 a.m. in Washington Park in Laramie with live music, carnival games with prizes and refreshments including doughnuts and popcorn. Additional planned activities include a visit by the University of Wyoming Cheerleaders and Pistol Pete, tours of Laramie Fire Department vehicles and face painting. Additional special guests will be announced as they are confirmed.
