Lobos perfect in conference, move on to state

WHEATLAND – The Lobos kept their conference winning streak going after they trounced the Cheyenne Hawks 10-4 in their final home game of the regular season on July 23.

The Hawks took an early lead with two points. Despite several early game stolen bases, the Lobos couldn't capitalize until the fourth inning, when they tied the game. Braden Fagenbush and Brendan Ruwart both scored after sacrifice flies from Blaine Geile and Caesar Zavala.

The Hawks would score twice more toward the end of the game, but the Lobos kept their momentum going for another win against one of their conference rivals. In the sixth inning, Ruwart, Geiele and Zavala each scored a run. The seventh inning was Wheatland's most productive with runs from Ruwart, Geile, Zavala and Kyle Pollock. Ruwart rounded out the 10-run game with one last run in the eighth.

Tyler Pollock pitched for four innings, striking out three batters, giving up five hits and two runs and walking a single batter. Zavala took over for the remainder of the game, striking out three batters of his own, giving up five hits, two runs, two walks and hitting one batter with a pitch.

The Lobos extended their winning streak to five after taking down conference rivals Jackson Giants and the Rock Springs Archie Hay Post No. 24. They beat the Giants 5-4 and took down the Archie Hay Post 17-7.

Wheatland enters the state tournament in Cheyenne as the No.1 seed of the AA South. The Lobos are scheduled to play the Gillette Roughriders in Cheyenne at 4 p.m. The winner of the Gillette/Wheatland matchup will face the winner of the Casper/Cheyenne Hawks game at 4 p.m. On Thursday. The loser of the matchups will play at 9:30 a.m., and the loser of the consolation game will be eliminated.

The Roughriders are in last place in the AA North with an overall record of 30-41 and a conference record of 1-5. The last time the Lobos and Roughriders played was in late May, when Gillette beat Wheatland 5-2.

The AA champion will go to the AA-League Northwest Regional Tournament to be played in Eugene, Ore., starting Aug. 8. Wheatland will be home to the A-League Northwest Regional Tournament.The first game starts at 9:30 a.m. On Aug. 9. Wheatland will play on Friday, Aug. 9, against the Alaska State Champ at 7:30 p.m.
