WHEATLAND – Nearly 80 years after his high school graduation, one Wheatland alumnus makes the journey to his one-time home every year.

Henry and Edna (nicknamed Jimmy) Combs were recently in town for the annual Old Grads meeting, traveling all the way from California as they do every year.

Old grads is now in its 56th year, welcoming graduates of Wheatland High School from 40 or more years ago to the Platte County Fairgrounds for a grand reunion.

Combs moved to Wheatland from Wellington, Colo. in 1927.

“They raised sugar beets out here for a couple of years, and then bought the place out in the Antelope Gap area, where the Johnsons live,” Henry said.

Henry, 95, graduated from Wheatland High School in 1935 as valedictorian.

“Which is quite a while,” he mused. “Seventy-eight years, something like that.”
