WHEATLAND – Four games, two days, 28 innings and what do the Lobos have to show for it? Three more victories to bring their record to 10-7.
The Wheatland Lobos almost took the entire series against the Rapid City Stars at home last week.
Game 1 saw a 9-4 win for Wheatland. After two scoreless innings, the Lobos kicked it into high gear with seven runs at the bottom of the third. A two-run homer from Braden Douglas kicked off the scoring streak, and a double from Tim Becket brought home two more Lobos. Finally, Ceasar Zavala knocked the Lobos’ second home run out of the park, tacking on an additional three runs. The Stars had one run of their own in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Wheatland only scored for one more inning, but that was all they needed. Braden Fagenbush and Zavala had back-to-back triples, bringing in one run, and Brendan Ruwart sacrificed for another run.
In pitching, Kyle Pollock pitched up to the top of the seventh inning, striking out two, giving up 10 hits and four runs, walking five and hitting two batters with pitches. Blaine Geile closed out the game, giving up one hit.
The second game ended in six innings after the Lobos won 5-2. Tim Becket started the game off with a bang, hitting a homer with the first at-bat. Three errors cost the Stars dearly as the Lobos went through their entire lineup, scoring five runs off of four hits.
The teams would keep each other scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when the Stars struck back with two runs, but it wasn’t enough as they were shut down again in the sixth, ending the game.
Tyler Pollock pitched for the entire game, striking out four, giving up four hits and walking three.
The third game was close, but after two extra innings, the Lobos won the day. The Lobos scored three runs in the first two innings, courtesy of Tyler Pollock, Ruwart and Becket. The Lobos kept Rapid City’s offense at bay for four innings until they broke through with three runs, tying up the score.
The Lobos would score one additional run before a three-inning drought until the top of the ninth, when the Lobos sealed the Stars’ fate with three winning runs. Additional Wheatland scorers were Kyle Pollock (twice), Daniel Lucero, and Becket.
Zavala pitched up to the fifth inning, striking out five, giving up seven hits and three runs and walking three. Ruwart pitched until the ninth, striking out three, giving up two hits, one run and a homer and walking five. Geile was the closer, giving up two runs and two hits while striking out one.
The fourth game was the Lobos’ only loss, falling 9-6.
Despite their winning week, the Lobos find themselves now in third place in the AA Group 2. The Jackson Giants are first at 13-13 overall and 1-0 in the division, while the Cheyenne Hawks are listed at 14-13.
The Lobos take on Gering, Neb. on the road on Wednesday and return home to host Scottsbluff, Neb. on Thursday with games starting at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. The team then heds out to the Gering Tournament on the road for five games on Friday and Satruday before going to Cheyenne to take on the Hawks. They will wrap up a busy week next Tuesday, taking on Scottsbluff on the road.
