Three qualify for nationals after state rodeo in Douglas

DOUGLAS – The Wheatland High School rodeo team nears the end of the summer rodeo season after strong showings at state this past weekend.

After the first round of events, Chloe Ashenhurst found herself on top of the pole bending standings at 20.683.Teigen Finnerty was fifth in steer wrestling with a time of 13.55. In breakaway roping, Tailon Crane found herself in ninth at 5.05, while Jhett Hadley was second in tie-down calf roping with a time of 15.27. In team roping, Finnerty and Torrington’s Garrett Murphy were third with a time of 7.85.

Ashenhurst won the second go in pole bending at 19.875.Finnerty improved to second place in steer wrestling, shaving off a few seconds and finishing at 9.30. Hadley came in third in the second round of tie-down roping but improved his time to 11.84.

Wheatland High School had three qualifiers for nationals this year. Ashenhurst qualified in pole bending, leading with 231.5 points. Nevada Starr is an alternate for bareback riding with 73 points. Jhett Hadley will join his usual team roping partner, Trace Steele of Sundance, in the third team roping spot with a collective 168 points to their names.

Ashenhurst was the sole Wheatland average buckle winner, taking the title in pole bending. She was the event saddle winner in the same event.

The National Finals Rodeo takes place in Rock Springs this year, running from July 14 through 20. As of press time, an event schedule is not yet available.

The rodeo team graduates Hiatt and Dusty Nipper this year.
