WHEATLAND – The 7-4 Wheatland Lobos have extended their winning streak to five games after toppling the Sheridan Rangers in a double-header this weekend.

The Lobos brought the seven-inning games to a close in six-and-a-half and six innings, respectively.

After a scoreless first inning in the first game, the Rangers took an early lead in the top of the second. The Lobos were quick to knot up the score after a single from Dan Chesser and quick runners drove Critter Ruwart and Ceasar Zavala home.

The Lobos shut down Sheridan’s offense for three innings while Wheatland piled on six more runs. The Rangers fired back with two runs in the sixth inning, but they were shut out again in a three-up, three-out top of the seventh.

Tim Becket and Kyle Pollock each scored in the third inning. The fourth inning was the Lobos’ most productive in runs. Tyler Pollock knocked a three-run homer out of the park, bringing Becket and Kyle Pollock home; Chesser also scored a run in the fourth. The Lobos’ final run came from Becket, and Wheatland was victorious 9-4.

The Lobos closed out the double-header with an 11-1 victory. The game started strong with a three-run first inning courtesy of Becket and Kyle and Tyler Pollock. Sheridan’s only run of the game came at the top of the second; not to be outdone, the Lobos scored a single run in that inning.

Wheatland kept and expanded their lead throughout the remaining innings, scoring five runs in the fourth inning, including back-to-back home runs from Blaine Geile and Tyler Pollock. Sheridan’s pitchers hit two batters in the inning, ultimately costing them an additional two runs. Zavala crossed the plate after a double from Josh Calvert and Dan Lucero’s walk.

Ruwart and Zavala capped off the victory with two final runs in the sixth inning.

The Lobos had three pitchers in the double-header. Tyler Pollock struck out six, gave up three hits and three runs, walked seven and gave up a home run. Zavala had no strikeouts this weekend, giving up three hits, two runs and walking two. Becket was the solo pitcher for the second game, striking out nine batters, giving up four hits and one run, walking five and hitting one batter with a pitch.

The Wheatland Lobos remain in second place in the AA Group 2 behind the Cheyenne Hawks, who are 11-6. The team heads to Scottsbluff, Neb. this Saturday to play and will come back home next Wednesday and Thursday to take on Rapid City, S.D. Post No. 320.
