Column: Open letters to mothers

Modified: Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

And now, open letters from the editor:

Dear mothers,

I certainly hope you took Sunday to relax and your family took extra time to pamper you. Based on all you do, frankly, you deserve so much more than a single day.

Biologically speaking, youíre a mother if youíve given birth to children, but that definition shouldnít be limited. Iím talking to any woman who has raised children, taught them, mentored them and continues to care for the new generation.

Know that though your job is more thankless than you and I would like, your work is invaluable to the future of our great nation and our world. There will come a day with your children will leave their nest and build their own lives, but without the unshakeable foundation youíve laid, it wouldnít be possible.

I salute you.

Sincerely and respectfully,

Dear Mom,

You were my first friend. Itís because of you and Dad that I have life, the most precious gift God could give to me through you. You fed me, clothed me, cleaned me, comforted me and did everything in your power to make sure I was raised the right way. Thank you.

Iíve done some massively stupid things in my days. Iíve not always given you and Dad the respect you deserved. Iíve lied to you, Iíve treated you with disrespect, and Iím sure there are plenty of days when you wanted to kick me out of the house. We had some rough times, you and I.

We also had some great times, too. Weíve had vacations, holidays, family visits, weddings celebrations and even just being in the comfort of home with each other. Whenever I come back to Ohio, itís being back with you and the family thatís the simplest yet one of the sweetest pleasures Iíve had in recent years.

Youíve always been there for me to talk to whenever I found myself in a tough spot. Your practical advice cut past some nasty emotions that plagued me and got right to the point. Your words and kindness helped me time and again to get right back on the horse, so to speak.

This paper couldnít contain all the things youíve done for me in my short time on this earth, and for all of it, I say again, ďThank you.Ē I canít say thank you enough, but know that youíve done a great job in raising me, youíre one of the very closest people I have in my life, and Iíll always be yours.

Love always,
