Khayla Otero is the girls champion and Luke Anderson held the boys title during this year’s Quick-Start Tennis tournament at West Elementary. Nearly 200 students competed in the third annual event.

WHEATLAND – Wheatland had a March Madness this year.

Nearly 200 boys and girls at West Elementary School competed in the all-school Quick-Start Tennis Tournament.

Dan Sherrill, physical education teacher, said this is the third year for the school-wide tournament. The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) awarded the school a grant to fund the tournament. Each class would compete in their own tournament, and the champions went to the prestigious March Madness.

“This was the culminating activity for the season,” Sherrill said. The tennis players met twice a week to play. “It’s a cornerstone of our PE curriculum.”

Sherrill added tennis was a sport the students could carry with them for many years to come.

“It’s athletic and a thinking man’s sport,” he said.

The girls champion this year was fourth-grader Khayla Otero, while the boys title went to fifth-rader Luke Anderson.

Rounding off the girls final four was Madison Stafford, Abby Serrill and Loren Mann. The boys in their final four were Trent Jones, Anderson, Kobey Preuit and Austin Pedersen.

West Elementary now has about 50 students who are members of the USTA.
