Below a painting by Harry Dearinger that used to hang in the local drug store, Chimney Rock looks down on a group of Slater Women’s Club “actors.” (Bibi — Kimm Malody, Rowdy — Peggy Bise, Doc — Flo Kostic, Miss Patience — Nancy Collins, Sally — Arlene Brayton and Juan Bandito — Rachael Baker). WHEATLAND – The first Thursday of every month, in a well-maintained but old stucco building in view of Chimney Rock a few miles east of I-25 on Slater Road, there is laughter, banter, fellowship and fulfillment of the motto "Help One Another." The Slater Women's Club certainly symbolizes camaraderie among women.

"[The late] John's (Baker) dad built this hall so it really means a lot to me," commented Betty Baker, vice president of the group. "We just have to keep it going."

Although the group has gone through several name changes, what began in 1936 continues to be a social gathering of woman who like each other and like to be together. Through all these years, they have continued to support one another and the Slater area.

"I didn't want to, but my husband insisted I come," Arlene Brayton said. "And I was hooked after one meeting!"
