Letter to the Editor: No-shows to veterans event

Posted: Wednesday, Apr 10th, 2013

Dear Editor,

I wanted express my great disappointment with county and municipal officials. I attended this event with my father to honor all the war vets of Platte County at the 4-H building. When the MC started to list off all the government officials who were supposed to be in attendance, not one of them showed up for the event. It was sad and embarrassing to see that none of them could take 15 minutes out of their day to honor our war vets who served their country, state and county proud.

The elected officials say they support the vets, but when it comes to honoring them, they are a no-show. I hope they can reflect and say “Hey, I wasn't that busy. I'm an elected official, and I should extend the common courtesy to either call or write a letter as to why I couldn't attend and say some kind words for the vets,” or if they could make it and it just wasn't that important to them, well, I guess they have to live with that decision.

I love my father and all the vets that serve in the military because they have given the greatest sacrifice you can give in this country. Next time there is an event in your county honoring vets, please think and act as the elected officials that you are. I do thank the one, and I mean only one, representative that extended the common courtesy of calling ahead of time to say he wasn't going to make it and expressed his regrets to all the attendees at the event and that was Mr. Kirkbride.

Dad and all vets, thank you for your service, and I was so proud to be in attendance, honoring our war heroes.

Shawn Horton
