CHADRON, Neb. – The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings track team started out strong with eight competitors placing in the top 10.
Junior Wes Sturdivant excelled in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter event, clinching second place at 5:25.77 and first place at 11:18.66 in the respective events. Jonathan Martinez, freshman, finished 10th in the shot put with 32’5”. Forest Foos was a few places behind him in the shot put with a 26’7” throw.
Justin Orr leapt for a 16’10” length in the long jump, earning him a 10th place spot. Orr finished in the top 10 a second time in the 200-meter event with a time of 27.06.
Senior Orr placed 11th in the 55-meter dash with a 7.44 time. Forest Freshmen Foos and Martinez finished close together again in the dash at 31st and 32nd with respective times of 8.52 and 9.58.
In the girls division, in the 55-meter hurdles, Katie Scherger crossed the finish line with a time of 11.46 to net third place. Freshmen Katie Scherger and Shea Leach finished fourth and seventh in the pole vault with heights of 6’6” for Scherger and 5’6” for Leach. Sophomore Hailey Sikman came in 13th at the long jump with a 9’2” leap. S
cherger, Leach and Sikman placed in the top 25 in the 55-meter dash. Scherger was 15th with a 8.97 time, and Leach and Sikman came within a second of each other with times of 9.74 and 9.81.
The Guernsey-Sunrise team is slated to head to Morrill, Neb. for the Morrill Early Bird. In the 1A dvision, Glendo and Lingle-Fort Laramie will join Guernsey-Sunrise as well as seven other listed teams from Nebraska and Wyoming. The meet is scheduled to start briht and early at 9 a.m. Saturday.
