Former Guernsey official pleads guilty to tax evasion

GUERNSEY-In a virtually silent U.S. District courtroom last Tuesday morning in Cheyenne, the truth was finally revealed as Leslie D. Zynda, former clerk-treasurer for the Town of Guernsey, pled guilty to one felony count of income tax evasion before U. S. Magistrate Judge Kelly Rankin.

According to the charging documents, Zynda filed fraudulent joint income tax returns for the calendar years 2005 through 2011 on behalf of her and her husband, understating their tax liability by $75,089, the amount due on unreported income of $276,706.

When asked by the court as to the source of that income, Zynda quietly stated, "Money that I took improperly from the Town of Guernsey."

Zynda's husband, Robert Zynda, was not in the courtroom.
