WHEATLAND – A winning weekend bumped the Wheatland Bulldogs (12-5 overall, 6-4 conference) from fifth to fourth place in the 3A East conference. The Bulldogs avenged earlier losses to the Newcastle Dogies (7-10 overall, 2-7 conference) and Torrington Trailblazers in home games on Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s matchup against the Dogies ended with a Bulldog victory 54-37. After a loss to 3A’s No. 3 Rawlins Outlaws, Newcastle is seventh in the 3A East conference.

Though Wheatland trailed the Torrington Trailblazers 12-10 during the first quarter, they quickly caught up by adding 12 points in the second quarter. The Blazers and Bulldogs were tied at the half, 22-22.

The third quarter started with two straight three-pointers from Braxten Fagenbush. Fagenbush would rack up three other three-pointers and a two, totaling 17 points on the day. By the end of the third, the Bulldogs led the Blazers 37-28.

The Bulldogs finished with a four-point victory over the Blazers, 47-43.

Wheatland faces tough opponents in the weekend ahead. The boys will host the 3A Nos. 4 and 5 Buffalo Bison and Douglas Bearcats on Friday and Saturday, respectively

Buffalo (11-5 overall, 5-3 conference) is just ahead of the Wheatland Bulldogs in the 3A East standings as of press time. The Bison are coming off a loss against the Glenrock Herders 53-39 this past weekend.

Douglas (10-8 overall, 7-2 conference) faces the Rawlins Outlaws on Friday before facing Wheatland again. The Bearcats, too, are coming off of a winning weekend, taking down both Glerock and Worland in double-digit victories, 55-44 and 58-46, respectively. The Bulldogs and Bearcats last tangled on Dec. 7, when Douglas prevailed 56-42.
