Bulldogs place third at Moorcroft Invitational

MOORCROFT The Wheatland High School Bulldog wrestling team returned home to face the No. 1-ranked Douglas Bearcats Thursday night.

The Bulldogs lost 57-15 but were competitive in several matches. At 106 lbs., No. 7-ranked Preston Gunter continued his recent improvement, leading No. 4-ranked Trevor Bennett 6-5 into the final seconds of the match. Gunter surrendered a takedown with 10 seconds left in the match to lose a heartbreaker.

Wheatland gave up injury forfeits at 113 and 170 lbs. At 120 Garrett Ayers and 126 Tyler Jenkins lost by pin.

Freshman Tel Parmely won dramatically by pin at 132 pounds for the Bulldogs. At 138,

No. 3 Jhett Eike defeated No. 5 Seth Harris 2-0. No. 6 Lance Lucas narrowly lost to #3 Blake Sanderson 3-2 in the 145-lb. match. Jerome Bircumshaw (152) and Daniel Andrews (160) lost by pin.

Kirby Cagle returned after missing four weeks with injury. Cagle wrestled well, narrowly losing 6-4 to No. 4-ranked Garrett Boner. Jace Loyd (195) continued his recent streak with a dominating performance against No. 6 Austin Degner, winning by pin in the first period. Loyd is the top-ranked 195-lb. wrestler in East 3A.

Lane Peasley (220) lost by pin to No. 2 Dalton Smith. Taylor Bush (285) lost to No. 1 CJ Allen by pin.

For the weekend, Jhett Eike placed fifth at the prestigious Chadron Invitational featuring top-ranked wrestlers from four states. On Saturday, the Bulldogs finished in third place at

the Moorcroft Invite. Wheatland put five kids into the finals and five into the third/fourth matches.

Preston Gunter, Lance Lucas, Jed Rietz, Jace Loyd and Taylor Bush all finished in second place. Nathan Willis, Pierce Peasley, Kirby Cagle, Lane Peasley finished in third place.

Michael Schmidl finished in fourth place. The Bulldogs wrestled well in a tournament which featured several top-ranked wrestlers from Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota.

The Bulldog team finished just behind Hettinger, N.D. in third place.
