Successful weekend for Wheatland grapplers

Wheatland Bulldog wrestler Lance Lucas sizes us his opponent during this past Friday’s action in Laramie. The Bulldogs came away with an upset victory over the Laramie 4A Plainsmen and came in third in their division during the Shane Shatto Tournament in Douglas.

LARAMIE – The Wheatland Bulldog wrestling squad returned to the mat this week following the Christmas break. On Thursday in Laramie, the Bulldogs matched up against the 4A Plainsmen. Lance Lucas returned after missing several matches because of injury.

Lucas at 145 and Jhett Eike at 138 came through with clutch victories. With the team down 24-34, Lane Peasley pinned his opponent to pull the Bulldogs to 30-34. Following a bye at 285, Wheatland was up 36-34 and needed a victory in the final match at 106.

Preston Gunter won with a 3-1 decision over his ranked 4A opponent to seal Wheatland’s upset victory.

On Friday, the Bulldogs traveled to Douglas to compete in the twoday Shane Shatto Invitational. The tournament included 11 4A schools and 11 3A/2A schools. Wheatland finished third out of the 11 smaller schools and 14th overall. In the JV division, Tyler

Jenkins, Justus Nelson, Tel Parmely and Trae Bitterman all finished with 2-1 records.

Parmely finished in first place in his weight bracket. For the varsity squad, the top Wheatland scorer was Jhett Eike with 22 points. Eike continued his outstanding senior season, losing only to eventual champion Blaze Crest from Cheyenne East. Michael Schmidl finished in 4th place in the 285 division which featured the top heavyweights from 3A and 4A. Schmidl came on strong and pinned his way through the consolation round totaling 18 team points. Taylor Bush scored seven team points for Wheatland followed closely by Lance Lucas and Jace Loyd with six each. Noah Fernandez, Lane Peasley and Josh Calvert scored four team points apiece. Freshman Nathan Willis and Preston Gunter finished out the scoring for the Bulldogs with two points. Senior Pierce Peasley at 170 lbs was named the Outstanding Sportsman for the tournament.

The wrestling season is heating up in the next several weeks. The Bulldogs compete Tuesday at Torrington and Friday at Newcastle.
