Mike "Lefty" Wright

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 10th, 2012

Mike "Lefty" Wright, (64) living in Cheyenne, but of Wheatland, Wyoming died October 2, 2012 surrounded by his family. Born John Michael Wright on February 17, 1948 in Beaumont, TX, to Sam, a sailor, and Lois, a W.A.V.E. He came to Wheatland Wyoming at age three for a family visit, It was a good place to be. He grew up in Wheatland, a small town boy with many stories to tell of escapades galore. After high school, he spent a short time working in Denver before earning an Associate’s Degree from Thatcher Junior College in Prescott, AZ. He joined the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam and served honorably as an air traffic controller. He met Kathy in 1974 while lifeguarding at the Wheatland swimming pool. Although they did not date that summer, they started seeing each other in the Fall of 1975; getting married in 1976. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1977 from the University of Wyoming. Their life together took them to Laramie, Douglas, Guernsey, Wheatland and finally Cheyenne. Mike served honorably as a deputy sheriff, a city policeman, a special agent for the railroad, an investigator for a county attorney and a private law firm, Wheatland’s Police Chief, the Platte County Clerk of District Court and finally retired as the State of Wyoming Medicaid Fraud Investigator. He was recognized several times for excellence in law enforcement with a medal of valor, outstanding peace officer awards and the Slim Fox award. Integrity and professionalism defined his style and being. Always an excellent provider and partner, Mike planned for the future, lived for the present, and took care of the details. A proud Father who set high standards and saw things black and white, he raised three strong and compassionate young men - Justin, Hunter, and Blayne. Mike loved a good card game with his buds, a cigar on the porch, working in the yard, telling a good joke, games with family, Judge Judy - et al, the Broncos, little children, orange sherbet with chocolate syrup, a date pack at the movies ... His sense of humor permeated family life. He honored his Mother and Father and enjoyed his siblings. Grandkids were everything and he regretted not being close enough to share a piece of cinnamon toast on their way to school each day.

His cancer journey began in 2006, three significant surgeries, radiation and chemo, more scans than you can count, pills, pills and more pills. He worked hard at getting better and even harder at the end but it was not the hand he was dealt. He will be remembered as a friend, always the gentleman, the big brother, the tough but loving Dad, a life partner who listened, sharing in problem solving or providing solid support. He was definitely the ‘wright guy’ and he will be missed by all who knew him.
Mike is survived by his wife Kathy (Alden) Wright; his three sons Justin Wright and wife Jennifer of Houston, TX; Hunter Wright of Laramie, WY; Blayne Wright, serving in the United States Coast Guard in Washington D.C.; two grandchildren Christopher and Solѐ Wright; his Father Sam Wright of Wheatland; a sister Carol Wright of Craig, CO; a brother Dan Wright of Craig, CO; brother Alan Wright of Wheatland and brother Kelly Wright of Wheatland.
