Grass fire burns 140 acres

At approximately 2 pm on Wednesday, July 20, Platte County Dispatch received numerous 911 calls reporting a grass fire in the area of Cozad Rd, E Frontage Rd and YO Ranch Rd. Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad called in the fire at railroad mile marker 211.

Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department responded and requested assistance from area fire departments. It was initially estimated that about 70 acres burned. However, a total of 140 acres burned from the fire, including one mobile home, one storage shed and corrals.

One fireman was transported to Platte County Memorial Hospital for burns. He was treated and released.

Approximately 47 firemen from Antelope Gap Fire, Palmer Canyon Fire, Camp Guernsey Fire, Sybille Canyon Fire, Guernsey Fire, Chugwater Fire assisted Wheatland Volunteer Fire Department along with Eastern Wyoming Ambulance Service, Platte County Sheriff's Office and the Wheatland Police Department.

The fire was contained at approximately 4:51 pm and declared out at approximately 5:43 pm.

A railroad track grinder caused the fire.
