Lady Dawgs beat Glenrock, go 2-3 during Casper Invite

WHEATLAND - The Wheatland Lady Bulldogs find themselves in the top half of the 3A East after winning three of their last six games last week.

The Lady Bulldogs started last week off right with a 3-1 win over the conference opponent Glenrock Lady Herders, giving the girls a third straight conference win.

The first match went to the Herders 25-19, but the Lady Bulldogs fought back to end the match in four sets, taking three straight sets with scores 25-22, 25-18 and 25-20.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored Glenrock by nine points with a total of 94 on the night, averaging 23.5 points per game and giving up a 21.2 average.

Six Lady Bulldogs served aces: Danielle Haroldson (3), Shelby Connolly (3), Sydnee Pollock (2), Ellen Anderson (1), Katie Phifer (1) and Kyleen Smith (1). Anderson led the team in kills with 13, and two others reached double digits: Pollock (12) and Haroldson (11). Smith had nine kills while Nicole Culver and Connolly each contributed one. Setter Connolly was the most active with assists with 39 while Haroldson had three and Phifer and Culver had one each. Right side hitter Anderson and libero Phifer each topped 20 digs with 26 and 22, respectively, followed by Haroldson (15), Culver (4) and Smith (2). The team had a total of four blocks with one each from Anderson, Smith, Culver and Pollock.

During the Casper Invite, the Lady Bulldogs beat the Green River Lady Wolves 2-1 (23-25, 25-15, 15-11) and the Cody Fillies 2-1 (25-21, 20-25, 15-13). Wheatland lost to the Gillette Lady Camels 2-0 (25-15, 25-12) the Kelly Walsh Lady Trojans 2-0 (29-27, 25-20) and to Cody in a rematch 2-0 (25-13, 25-21).

At Casper, Pollock led was an offense leader with nine aces and 26 kills in five matches. Smith recorded six aces, followed by Haroldson (2), Anderson (2), Phifer (1) and Culver (1). Three other Lady Bulldogs reached double digits in kills: Smith (17), Anderson (15) and Haroldson (13). Connolly (4), Culver (3), Phifer (1) and Avery Hanks (1) also recorded kills. Connolly recorded most of the team's 71 assists with 62, followed by Anderson (5), Kessey Hanks (2), Smith (1) and Pollock (1).

On defense, Phifer recorded 57 digs, Pollock 30, Anderson 25, Haroldson 24, Connolly 17, Smith 8, Kessey Hanks 4 and Culver 1. Smith had four of the team's blocks; also recording blocks were Anderson (2), Avery Hanks (1), Haroldson (1) and Connolly (1).

The Lady Bulldogs recorded 19.3 points per set, giving up an average of 22. Wheatland earned 232 points during the invite while their opponents came away with 264.

After last week, the Lady Bulldogs have a 3-2 conference record, tied with third-place Newcastle. Wheatland is right in the middle of the 3A East pack with an overall record of 11-14; Douglas (4-0 conference, 19-5 overall), Rawlins (4-0 conference, 18-6) and Newcastle (3-2 conference, 10-7 overall) make up the top three.

The Lady Bulldogs are back home this week to take on the Worland Lady Warriors. Worland is in fifth in the 3A East with two conference wins and a 12-11 overall record. Last week, Glenrock swept Worland in three games (25-23, 25-12, 25-18). Friday's freshman game starts at 4 p.m. with the JV and varsity games to follow (at about 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively).

Next Tuesday, the Guernsey-Sunrise Lady Vikings will host the freshman and sophomore Lady Dawgs. The freshman game starts at 4 p.m. with the sophomore game to follow.
