Lobos eliminated after two games at state

Posted: Wednesday, Aug 7th, 2013

Braden Fagenbush was one of three Lobos players to make the AA All-State teams this year.

CHEYENNE The Wheatland Lobos couldn't outlast the Gillette Roughriders and AA South's Cheyenne Hawks, falling to both teams and ending their state tournament run after two days in Cheyenne.

The Lobos went into the state tournament as the No. 1 seed of the AA South. The No. 4 Gillette Roughriders (1-5 division, 31-43 overall as of July 28) played the Lobos last Wednesday, upsetting the Lobos 8-7. The No. 2 Casper Oilers (4-2 division, 53-24 overall) blanked the Roughriders 10-0 on Thursday, and the No. 2 Jackson Giants (4-2 division, 36-28 overall) survived the Roughriders, eliminating them 11-9.

Gillette played Wheatland once during the regular season, beating the Lobos 5-2.

Despite a great record against the No. 3 Cheyenne Hawks (2-4 division, 26-29 overall as of July 28), winning four out of the five regular season matchups, the Lobos fell to Cheyenne 9-6 after a late-game scoring run.

The Lobos scored once during the third inning for an early lead, keeping the Hawks grounded until the sixth inning. Cheyenne scored three in the sixth, giving them the lead 3-2. Wheatland struck back in the eighth inning, adding four points and expanding their lead to 6-4.

In the ninth inning, the Cheyenne Hawks snatched the lead back, scoring five runs and sealing their victory for a final score of 9-6.

The Hawks entered tournament play against the Oilers, losing 22-4. After beating Wheatland, the Cheyenne Hawks lost to the Sheridan Troopers. WyoPreps reports the Troopers were down 10-5 going into the eighth inning, but they came back to win it by scoring two in the eighth and five runs in the ninth.

Cheyenne Post No. 6 ultimately took the AA crown, winning their 12th title in the past 13 years. They beat the Casper Oilers 14-10 and will move on to the AA League Northwest Regional Tournament in Eugene, Ore.

Though the Lobos were eliminated from state, they will play in the upcoming A League Northwest Regional Tournament, hosted in Wheatland, this week.

Wheatland's final record was 6-0 in the AA South division and 27-16 overall.
