WHS Wrestlers fourth at East 3A Regionals

BUFFALO – The Wheatland Bulldog wrestling team headed north to Buffalo to compete in the 2013 East 3A Regional wrestling tournament this weekend.

The Bulldogs finished in fourth place of eight teams behind top three Worland, Douglas and Torrington.

The Bulldogs will send 15 wrestlers to the state tournament with two others just missing out. Guernsey’s lone wrestler Garret Ayers qualified at 120 lbs for the Bulldogs. Tel Parmely fought off injury at 126 lbs and managed to qualify. Jerome Bircumshaw (145), Jedd Rietz (152), Daniel Andrews (160), Teigan Finnerty (160), Kevin Grimes (182), Josh Calvert (195) and Michael Schmidl (285) all managed to qualify for state. Freshman Josh Calvert suffered a season ending injury and will be back strong next season. Senior Pierce Peasley ended his season going 1-2 this weekend, nearly defeating No. 1-ranked Dalton Burgener in a back and forth match at 170.

Freshman Preston Gunter bumped from the 106 to the 113 lb division and surprised the field making it to the finals. He wrestled well against No. 1-ranked Jordan Pingrey from Douglas losing 7-2 for a second place finish.

Junior Lance Lucas took home top honors for the Bulldogs dominating Jordan Britton of Torrington 9-0 for the regional championship at 138 lbs.

The Bulldog’s big boys wrestled well with place winners from 182-285. Junior Kirby Cagle bounced back in the consolation round and defeated Clayton McCreery of Worland 5-3 for third place at 182 lbs. Junior Jace Loyd at 195 lbs recovered from a disappointing day one and dominated day two winning three in a row to finish third. At 220 lbs, sophomore Lane Peasley had his best tournament of the year, winning two matches on day 2 and finishing 4th in the medal round.

Senior Taylor Bush (285) pushed No. 1 C.J. Allen of Douglas into the third overtime period tied 1-1. Bush lost on a controversial stalling call 2-1 to finish in second place. The 2A, 3A, 4A state wrestling tournament will be held this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23 at the Casper Events Center.
