Vikes split week before regionals

GUERNSEY – The No. 4 Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings (15-5) are heading to regionals this week after a strong regular season.

The Pine Bluffs/Guernsey-Sunrise matchup last week was a tale of two high-scoring offenses, but in the end, the Vikings fell just short during last Tuesday’s game, losing 81-75.

Pine Bluffs took the early lead and kept a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter, 18-9. The Hornets scored eight unanswered points, including two free throws, before the Vikings broke the scoring streak with three points.

The Vikings narrowed the scoring gap and trailed seven points by the end of the first half, 36-29.The Vikes put up 20 points in the second quarter using six different players.

Pine Bluffs scored 24 points in the third quarter, and Guernsey-Sunrise added 15 of their own. The Hornets widened their lead to the biggest of the game by the time the third quarter ended, leaving the Vikes trailing by 16 points 60-44.

Guernsey-Sunrise bounced back with 31 points in the fourth quarter, but the Hornets replied with 21 points. Though the Vikings fought hard in the final quarter, Pine Bluffs prevailed 81-75.

The Vikes picked up a win on the road, defeating the Lingle-Fort Laramie Doggers 51-49. Though the Vikings were down in the first three quarters of the game, they came back with a 23-point surge in the fourth to edge out their opponents.

According to unofficial tournament matchups from Wyopreps, The Vikes are set to start tournament play on the 21st at 7 p.m. They are tentatively slated to take on the winner of the Arvada-Clearmont/Hulett game.

The Arvada-Clearmont Panthers (4-15 overall, 1-9 conference) have not faced the Vikings this season and are fifth in the 1A Northeast conference behind the Hulett Red Devils (5-15 overall, 4-6 conference). The Red Devils and Vikings have met twice before during this season, both times resulting in Viking victories.
